Formulation Basis
The congenital essence is stored in the kidney and the kidney governs reproduction, hence infertility is closely related with the kidney as well as the dysfunction of the kidney qi – Tiankui – thoroughfare and conception meridians – uterine axis. The deficiency of kidney qi and yang cannot warm the uterus and hence the uterus is unable to contain the essence for the onset of pregnancy; or the essence and blood insufficiency causes the vacuity of the thoroughfare and conception meridians and the malnourishment of the uterine meridians, causing difficulties in conceiving. The spleen governs movement and transformation and acts as the source of acquired constitution which nourishes the congenital foundation. As recorded in Li Shizhen’s “Compendium of Materia Medica” Chapter of Essence, “the extract of the construction blood is transformed into essence, therefore essence is plentiful when there is sufficient blood and when qi congregates blood together.” The congenital and acquired essences act synergistically, hence treatment is mainly based on the supplementation of the kidney and the security of essence. With the addition of the supplementation of the spleen, qi and blood, it builds the foundation for the nourishment of the reproductive essence and helps with fertility and conception.[1-3]
H&F Yanzong Capsule is based on the classical formulations of Five-Seed Progeny Pill, Fetal Longevity Pill and Fetal Origin Beverage. The formula is targeted at infertility and impotency due to kidney essence and blood deficiency. Semen Cuscutae, Fructus Lycii and Fructus Schisandrae supplement the kidney and secure the essence[3]; Ramulus Taxilli and Radix Dipsaci Asperoidis supplement the kidney and support the foetus; Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Radix Glycyrrhizae, Colla Corii Asini, Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Radix Paeoniae Alba supplement the qi and blood.[4] This herbal combination allows for the supplementation of the kidney essence, qi and blood, and the regulation of the thoroughfare and conception vessels. With the nourishment of the congenital essence by the acquired essence, it ensures the healthy function of the spleen and kidney so that the foetus can be connected with the body for health growth and development.[5]

Clinical Indications
Infertility, impotency, essence deficiency, fatigue and inhibited sexual desire in men, irregular menstruation with aching lumbus and weak legs in women, etc. due to kidney essence and blood deficiency
Dosage and Precaution
2-4 capsules 2 times daily, or in accordance to physician’s orders. Administration of this medicinal product should be stopped upon discovery of any adverse drug reactions or changes in physical appearance of the capsules.
