Formulation Basis

Peptic ulcer disease is a chronic condition which occurs in the stomach and duodenum. It is mainly due to gastric acid eating into the mucous membrane. Typical signs and symptoms include chronic, periodic and rhythmic upper abdominal pain, belching, regurgitation, etc. A congenital deficiency in the spleen and stomach, irregular or bad eating habits, workplace stress, insufficient rest or enduring illness damaging the spleen, stomach and yang qi: these factors cause the cold deficiency of the middle energiser and insufficient warm nourishment of the stomach, resulting in abnormal governing of descent by the stomach and therefore abdominal pain.[1-2]
H&F Ulcer Relief Capsule is based on the classical formula Minor Decoction of Strengthening the Middle Energiser as recorded in “Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases”. The formula is targeted on the pain in the upper abdomen and epigastrium due to the cold deficiency of the middle energiser. Ramulus Cinnamomi, Brown Sugar, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, Fructus Jujubae warm the middle and harmonise the stomach; Radix Paeoniae Alba and Radix Et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae Praeparata Cum Melle emolliate the liver, relax tension and relieve pain[2-3]; Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis and Fructus Perillae direct qi downward, resolve dampness, enliven the spleen and clear the viscera; Concha Arcae
Praeparata and Endoconcha Sepiae reduce hyperacidity and pain[1,4]; Herba Taraxaci clear stomach heat and resolve toxins. [5] The herbal combination has effects of relax tension, reduce hyperacidity and pain, warm the middle and supplement vacuity.

Clinical Indications

Pain in the upper abdomen and epigastrium, often recurring, periodic and rhythmic due to the cold deficiency of the middle energiser. Abdominal pain can be aggravated by emotional stimuli, fatigue and other factors, with accompanying gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, eructation, regurgitation, nausea, etc.

Dosage and Precaution

For oral administration, 2-4 capsules 2 times daily, or as per physician’s orders based on the assessment of the patient’s condition. Administration of this medicinal product should be stopped upon discovery of any adverse drug reactions or changes in physical appearance of the capsules.
