Formulation Basis

Gout is a recurring form of inflammatory arthritis due to increased blood uric levels, resulting in the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the synovial membrane, synovial bursa, cartilage and other connective tissues. According to Zhu Danxi, one of the four great physicians in the period of Jin-Yuan Dynasties, in his literature “Treatise on Inquiring the Properties of Things, Inquiring Gout”, gout is recorded to be due to the intertwining of the wind-cold-damp evils compounded by excessive intake of rich and oily foods, causing the accumulation of damp-heat and stagnation of the meridians and channels by phlegm, blood stasis and turbidity. Symptoms displayed include inflammation of the joints in the
limbs, tendons and muscles with pain, numbness, redness and welling, often affecting the first metatarsophalangeal joint, ankle joint, knee joint, etc. The mobility of joints can become restricted and can even cause joint deformities in more serious cases.[1-3]
H&F Tong Feng Relief is mainly based on the treatment principles of of eliminating damp-heat, purging turbidity and relieving swelling pain. Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae resolves toxins, eliminates dampness, eases joint movement and relieves swelling; Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae separates the clear and turbid fluids[1]; Herba Lycopi, Rhizoma Alismatis and Semen Plantaginis disinhibit water, and relieve swelling; Semen Coicis eliminates dampness and fortifies the spleen; Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Flos Carthami, Semen Persicae and Radix Paeoneae Rubrae nourish and activate blood, and resolve stasis[3]; Olibanum and Myrrha free qi movement, activate blood and relieve swelling.[4] The herbal combination have effects of dispelling dampness and transforming turbidity, activating blood, transform stasis and relieve swelling for the relief of joint pain and aiding in uric acid metabolism.

Clinical Indications

Frequent and recurrent attacks of arthritis with extreme joint pain usually during the night due to the Bi syndrome accumulating heat and the downward flow of damp-heat into the joints, causing gout

Dosage and Precaution

For oral administration, 2-4 capsules 2 times daily, or as per physician’s orders. Administration of this medicinal product should be stopped upon discovery of any adverse drug reactions or changes in physical appearance of the capsules.
